AI Voice Cloning
Scammers have a new weapon to steal your money: artificial intelligence. Two malicious uses of AI
are voice cloning and deepfakes.
- Voice cloning artificially replicates someone’s voice to sound very authentic, including the tone, intonation, and pronunciation.
- Deepfakes are videos or photos that artificially replicate a person, often doing or saying something. There are many voice clones and deepfakes of CEOs, politicians, and celebrities.
Cybercriminals recently orchestrated a heist using deepfake technology and AI voice cloning that netted $25 million. They created convincing digital replicas of senior executives in a videoconference, deceiving company employees into transferring the hefty sum to their account.
Signs of voice cloning include:
- A sense of fear or emergency situation to act immediately.
- A request for money by wire transfer or payment app.
- A request for personal information.
- A request to keep the conversation secret.
- An offer that sounds too good to be true.
Tips to help avoid being scammed:
- Be leery of caller ID; it can be faked.
- Do not give out personal information.
- Create a secret password to use with family and friends.
- Keep social media private.
- Use two-factor authentication on services and accounts.
