Stay Safe from Jugging

The FBI has issued a warning alerting people to an increasingly alarming crime trend called "jugging."

What is Bank Jugging?

Bank jugging involves thieves targeting individuals who have withdrawn large sums of money from financial institutions. These criminals observe and follow their victims to less secure locations, where they rob them, often through vehicle break-ins or direct confrontations. This crime tends to spike during times when people are more likely carrying large amounts of cash, such as tax season and the holidays. 

Tips to Help Protect Yourself from Jugging:

1. Be Alert: Be mindful of your surroundings when withdrawing money. Avoid talking on your cell phone and look around to see if anyone is watching or following you. Avoid using an ATM that is not working properly. If you notice anyone acting suspiciously, leave the area immediately or call 9-1-1 if you feel threatened.
2. Conceal Your Cash: After withdrawing cash, immediately put it away in your wallet or purse. Avoid counting it in public or traveling with it on your person for an extended period. Never leave large sums of cash in your car.
3. Be Discreet: If you are using an ATM, shield the keypad with your hand or body while entering your PIN. Make sure to take your card and transaction receipt before leaving.
4. Avoid Stops: Go directly to your destination after leaving the bank and avoid unnecessary stops. If you suspect you're being followed, drive to a public place like a police station or a well-lit crowded shopping center.
5. Bring a Friend or Coworker: Safety in numbers can help deter potential criminals. If possible, invite a friend or coworker to accompany you when making large transactions.
6. Be Unpredictable: Vary your routine to make it harder for criminals to predict your movements. Visit the bank at different times or days of the week or use different branches or ATMs.
